The Beardie That Started It All

Every Bearded Collie lover has that one special dog who started it all. For me, that dog was Bufferin, affectionately known as "Buffy." When Buffy came into my life, I had no idea that he would spark a lifelong love for the Bearded Collie breed. He was a handsome brown Beardie with a wonderful personality and a special place in my heart. Looking back now, I realize that Buffy wasn't just my first Bearded Collie—he was the beginning of a journey that would shape so much of my life in the years to come. Like many first-time Beardie owners, I was learning as I went. Buffy introduced me to the intelligence, humor, independence, and charm that make Bearded Collies such a beloved breed. He kept me laughing, occasionally kept me guessing, and taught me more than he probably ever realized. At one point, I even tried showing Buffy. A judge suggested that he needed some "road work" to improve his conditioning. Following that advice, I attempted to exercise him alongside a bicycle. Unfortunately, Buffy decided that crossing directly in front of the wheel was a much better idea! The result was a rather painful lesson, some injured ribs, and the end of my brief road-working career. Looking back, I can laugh about it now, although it certainly wasn't very funny at the time. I wish I had taken more photographs of Buffy. In those days, cameras weren't always within reach, and I never imagined how much I would treasure those memories years later. While I may only have a few pictures of him today, the memories remain clear and precious. Because of Buffy, I discovered the wonderful world of Bearded Collies. He was the dog who started it all—the first Beardie, the first teacher, and the foundation of a passion that would eventually lead to dog shows, lifelong friendships, club activities, pet therapy work, breeding, and Bodacious Beardies. Every Beardie who followed owes a little something to the handsome brown boy who captured my heart so many years ago. Thank you, Buffy, for starting a journey that continues to bring joy to my life every day.
